The Curator's Notes: The Story Behind The Legend

The Goldfinger Icon

This is arguably the most famous hotel in the world for any "petrol head." The Hotel Belvedere sits at a hairpin bend on the legendary Furka Pass, one of the most celebrated driving roads in the Swiss Alps.

Its fame was cemented forever in 1964 when it served as a key location in the James Bond film Goldfinger. It was on this very pass that 007, in his Aston Martin DB5, was first spied on by Tilly Masterson. Today, the Rhone Glacier it once overlooked has receded, and the hotel itself is closed—a silent "ghost" of its former glory. It has become a pilgrimage site for driving enthusiasts who come to pay respects and drive the "007-Strasse" in the wheel tracks of a legend.
