Alfa Romeo P2 (1930) — The Vertical Spare Wheel

Sale price€149,00

Born from brutal pre-war racing, the Alfa Romeo P2 (1930) is raw engineering at its purest. No comfort, no compromise—just a machine built to survive violent roads, crushing vibration, and the chaos of early Grand Prix competition.

Act I of the triptych isolates one of the P2’s most iconic details: the razor-thin nose and the vertical spare wheel recessed into the fuel tank. A design so extreme it once caused a mid-race fuel-tank fire that Varzi’s mechanic extinguished without stopping.

This frame captures the aggression, asymmetry, and mechanical tension that made the P2 a weapon rather than a car. A piece carved from the legend of the 1930 Targa Florio.

Curated by Still Motion

That vertical spare wasn’t for style — it was the only way to keep weight centered on roads rough enough to break axles. A brutal solution for a brutal race car.

Act I — The Fire, the Cloth, and the Win

The Alfa Romeo P2 is a machine forged in legend. Designed by Vittorio Jano—architect of Alfa Romeo’s first World Championship title—its 1930 evolution represents the peak of pre-war engineering. Piloted by Achille Varzi, the car achieved an almost mythical victory at the 1930 Targa Florio after a race defined by violence, fire, and impossible resilience.

During the race, the spare wheel’s vibrations cracked the fuel tank, igniting a fire mid-competition. Varzi’s mechanic smothered the flames with a cloth without stopping. They kept racing—and they won.

That victory sealed both the P2’s immortality and Varzi’s legend.

The Art’s Story — Our Curation: This triptych exists thanks to the insight of a master Alfa Romeo and motorsport connoisseur who supports our Atelier. Their deep knowledge and lived experience with these machines gave us a privileged, intimate perspective rarely accessible to others.

From their private collection, we meticulously selected the angles that reveal the true character of the 1930 P2—its scars, its asymmetry, its uncompromising purpose. We then worked with a master image editor to refine these into a cohesive, limited-edition fine art series:

a visual narrative of one of racing’s greatest legends.

MATERIALS

Printed on Fine Art Paper

We use museum-grade fine art paper to honour each photograph’s depth, texture and tones, giving collectors a print that feels rich, calm and built to last.

Depth & Detail

Giclée printing on fine art paper delivers intense, even colours and smooth gradients, achievable only with dedicated pigment printers – every reflection and contour stays beautifully defined.

MADE TO COLLECT

Archival fine art paper and pigment inks keep tones stable and paper smooth for decades, so each piece can live like a true collectible – signed, certified, and ready to enter a serious collection.

CALM, MATTE FINISH

The soft matte surface keeps reflections low and colours gentle on the eye, so the photograph looks composed and readable in real rooms – from bright living spaces to focused gallery walls.

MAINTENANCE TIPS

CARING FOR YOUR FINE ART PRINT

Fine art giclée prints on archival cotton paper are made to last for generations when treated with care. Handle yours by the edges, keep it away from direct sunlight, humidity, and heat sources, and always frame it under glass or plexiglass. To clean, dust only the frame or glazing with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
